The quality of post-completion well records and workovers can be poor, affecting the ability of operators to learn from costly incidents and prevent their re-occurrence. Key pieces of knowledge about a well can be buried in a well file or in the minds of a couple of engineers.
One reason for the lack of operations-focused databases may be the perceived effort and cost required to build them. With this in mind, Petrofocus have developed Well Explorer. This product capitalizes on the huge resource of data already held in the Completions Manager diagrams to populate its database.
Users can add their own notes and properties to key well components such as safety valves, packers, gas lift mandrels etc. The database can then be analyzed for issues like well equipment performance, reasons for running a particular tool configuration or failure trends under certain well conditions. Well Explorer therefore provides an intuitive and logical means of retaining and enhancing corporate knowledge, allowing immediate and informed discussion of well issues and plans without the need to refer to well files.
Overview
Well Explorer is a well database that provides corporate-wide access to Completions Manager drawings whilst maintaining the integrity of the original drawings.
It automatically builds a completion database from the information already held in the drawings, thus dramatically reducing the time needed to build a database from scratch.
Beyond the database itself, Well Explorer also offers an easy and intuitive way of finding well information using a couple of mouse clicks within a graphical, Explorer-type interface. . The well information can include any documents associated with a well:
- Related drawings, such as:
- Completions Manager well schematic
- Proposed wells
- Previous workovers
- Sub-assembly modules
- Wellhead and xmas tree certification sheets
- Well history
- Well report
- Original Casing Plans
- Tubing tallies
- Equipment running and pulling procedures
Additional details and comments can be added to the well components and shared with colleagues your the organization. Standard or custom queries can be run and a list of drawings matching those queries returned, e.g. How many packers of this type have failed in these well conditions??
Benefits
Well Explorer provides the following unique combination of benefits:
- A well completion database at a fraction of the cost of traditional corporate databases
- Retains key information and knowledge about specific equipment and wells within the organization
- A database focused on the client's specific set of well configurations and conditions
- Minimizes data input so users to only need to add information that is considered important to their circumstances
Well Explorer is currently at the prototype stage pending further input from a number of interested clients.
